yes, this quote is from “sex and the city.” but it wasn’t one of the standouts — it’s not tagged across movie posters or burning hearts of teenage fans. it was an aside, at best, by the miss carrie bradshaw. and she was, of course, speaking about the one and only mr. big.

this past year, i had it written out on a hot pink sticky note on a bulletin board above my desk. it’s not particularly eloquent — it’s a little choppy and doesn’t necessarily flow as a grand gesture or key to the secret of life. but it spoke to me. it spoke to the best and to the worst of me, all in just one short line.

everyone lives by a different moral code — some stick to the pages of the bible, while others take to the ways of their parents, or friends, or bono. and then there are some that collect a little bit of everything along the way.

that’s where i find myself. i grew up in the church — actually, i’m growing up in the church. i’ve been surrounded by the, in my mind, never truly defined religious grounds that lay out a constantly broken set of thou shall nots and psalms striving for something better. i’ve found my spirituality in the community and the grander mission to help and to welcome and to love with open arms. and still, with those morals in mind, all i do is fall short. i’m constantly bitching or judging or doubting the things around me. i’ve yet to love all unconditionally, which sums up success on that side of my moral compass.
